New (Wildlife) Encounter

With the temps warming up into summer lately and the same is forecasted for the rest of the week, our walks are starting hours earlier to catch the morning cool.  Today, on the Huskies’ walk, we experienced something new that had all three of us startled for minutes after.

About 3/4ths of the way through our walk and on the path towards home, we cut through the trail for about only 50 feet of pavement.  I have been avoiding the trail in recent weeks due to the tall grass growth that brings ticks and fox tails with it.  I thought we could be quick on this short cut and get out unharmed.  Neither of us got bit or sucked up a fox tail in our noses, but all three of us did have to suddenly stop in our tracks and as suddenly hop to the side of the path to avoid an unseen statuesque, large-sized, lone goose standing still in the tall grasses.  It was on the same side as Winnie only 3 feet away and in wing flapping distance of this “monster”.  Once Nicoya noticed the goose, it startled him enough to have him want to take off running on his arthritic hips.  In our commotion, the goose did spread its wings open wide and even wider his beak but silently.  That’s all I saw was the inside of his mouth and was expecting him to lunge at Winnie with his beak chomping down on the side of her body.

Luckily, that is as far as his body moved until we passed by him.  Also, luckily, for a woman walking on the other side of the path who witnessed the whole thing and was as startled as us, decided to turn around and walk the other direction.  She didn’t want to take any chances with it possibly attacking her since it stayed in its “attack” like form as the woman and I momentarily chatted about it.

We walked the rest of the way home with no other excitement to report.

The first photo is the Huskies catching their breath at home after this new experience.

As mentioned in a previous post (My Dog pack, AFter the Storm), the second photo are the Huskies in their correct positioning on the landing inside the house.  No outright arguments or body smashing observed or occurred for Nicoya to reclaim his rightful position.
